Lapels are another suit feature you will want to think about. Many people do not realize that the shape of a suit’s lapels can enhance or detract from the shape of your face. Those of you who have long, thin faces might want to consider opting for shorter, rounder lapels. Rounder faces will appear slimmer with thinner, more pointed lapels. Another lapel option is that of Oriental style suits, where the lapels are very short and do not lay flat against the suit. Rather, they stand up vertically from the fabric.

One obvious difference between single and double breasted men’s suits is in the use of buttons. A formal, single breasted suit typically has only two buttons, and the lower one is never fastened. With a double breasted suit, it is the jacket’s top two buttons that are never closed.

Jacket pockets are decorative. Even when utilizing a pocket square, even this should be decorative. On most formal and designer suits, the actual pocket is inside with only a thin opening visible on the breast.
